According to authoritative statistics, in 2003, a total of 324 million cards have been issued in China, in which about 123 million mobile phone IC cards (including 12 million UIM cards), 70 million pay phone IC cards, 15 million campus cards, 13 million pulic transportation cards, 6 million smart labels, 8.3 million social security cards and other categories of cards, about 89 million.
With the establishment of “Digital Olympics ” project, China Smart Card market will embrace spring period in development. As one of the demonstrative projects of “Digital Olympics”, Beijing has established about 300 “Digital Beijing information pavilions” in downtown areas within 2003. It is used for Securities service, inquiry of health care and social security information, Job-hunting consultation, and IC card consumption etc. The establishment of such information pavilions will provide a great amount of service to IC Card Consumption, and definitely will generate the wide application of Smart Card. The introduction of Beijing Green Card, Citizen Card and Smart Transportation Project forecasts the broad prospects of future smart card market. In the next five years, China will become the largest smart card user with demanding amount of 2.5 billion.
